Crafting Ideas for Fall in Central Oregon
Fall is upon us. The days are slowly becoming shorter, the nights are becoming darker, and the family activities are starting to move from outdoors to indoors. In preparation for the more introverted evenings ahead of us, here are a few crafting ideas for fall in Central Oregon.
Our Favorite Crafting Ideas for Fall in Central Oregon
Get Crafty with Preschoolers
For those not yet in school, it can help to have several activities available for use on a rainy day. Head to Trader Joe’s for some plants and flowers, then bring them home for use in a number of crafts. Put food coloring in water and watch as your flowers turn colors, or weave flowers together to make flower crowns or decorative wreaths. Perhaps even grow a window garden by planting seeds in eggshells so your child can watch with wonder as they grow.
Food4Less also has everything you need to make flubber—that silly putty-like substance that is so fun to use and provides endless hours of entertainment for your preschoolers. Simply purchase two bottles of Elmer’s glue, food coloring, and borax (which are found in the laundry aisle). Then mix ¾ cup of cold water with one cup of glue, and food coloring. In another bowl mix ½ cup of hot water with one teaspoon of borax. Combine the two and rinse off any excess water.
Teach Baking to Elementary Schoolers
Once your kids reach elementary school, it’s time to teach them how to use the kitchen. Stop by Trader Joe’s or Food4Less to pick up everything you need to make your mother’s chocolate chip cookies or the birthday cake you used to have when you were growing up. Cook up some nostalgia by making Rice Krispy treats or bake a batch of cupcakes for your child’s kindergarten classroom. No matter what you cook, you’ll have a fun time together in the kitchen and some yummy treats to enjoy when you’re done.
Let’s not forget playing with your food. Grab some pasta noodles and string to make macaroni necklaces, or buy glue and paper so you can make penne pasta artwork. Crayons, markers, coloring books, popsicle sticks, cotton balls, and paper can also be handy grocery store pick-ups for endless hours of artful entertainment.
Practice Nail Art with Middle Schoolers
As your children get older, they may become more excited about being the craft than making the craft. Preteen girls especially might become excited about the idea of decorating their clothing or crafting their nails. Go to Food4Less to purchase nail polish, nail polish remover, nail glue, toothpicks, and any gems you’d like to use for decorating. Lay out some newspaper and allow your daughter to paint her nails however she likes. Perhaps she can make polka dots or flowers with the toothpicks.
Decorate the Walls with High Schoolers
One of the most exciting things about being a high school student is having the opportunity to decorate your space. Stop by World Market to grab wall art, picture frames, posters, bulletin boards, and thumbtacks, then spend the day going through magazines, making collages, and framing pictures. Hang them on the walls in a masterpiece you’ll enjoy making together.
